Mobiles on planes

AMTA recommends that passengers always comply with the relevant airlines policy and so if asked to turn off your mobile device or put it into “flight mode” you should do so.

Putting your phone into “flight mode” will stop the device from connecting to the mobile network but allow you to still access your phone to play games, listen to music or access your phone’s stored data. On some airlines you may be able to use in-flight wi-fi while your phone is in flight mode.

Some airlines also request that passengers ask for assistance if they drop their phone down the back or side of the airline seat, rather than try to retrieve it themselves, as a mobile device may pose a fire risk if it is squashed by a reclining airline seat. So, if you are ever in any doubt, always ask for assistance from the flight crew when it comes to using your phone safely on a plane.
