GPS maps and music
What about using mobiles for maps and music?
The Australian Road Rules do enable drivers, in some circumstances, to use mobile phones as navigational aids.
However, the Australian road rules are model laws only. It is still up to each State or Territory to adopt the rules and while the rules have generally been adopted in each jurisdiction, variations within each State and Territory remain in place.
Generally, using your mobile’s GPS function as a navigational aid is permitted as long as the phone is attached properly in a cradle.
Our best advice therefore is to check the specific rules in your State or Territory, particularly in relation to learner and provisional licence holders as in some states these drivers are not permitted to use a mobile phone for any purpose or in any circumstances.
Similarly, rules relating to listening to music also vary from State to State.
