Manage mobile data use

With mobile devices now central to our daily lives, with streaming, social media, remote work, and smart apps all using data, managing your mobile data usage is more important than ever. Here are the latest tips to help you stay in control and avoid unexpected charges.

1. Understand Your Data Plan

  • Know your limits: Data is measured in megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB). 1 GB = 1000 MB.
  • Choose wisely: Select a plan that suits your usage habits. Many providers now offer unlimited data, data sharing across family plans, or rollover options.
  • Review regularly: If your usage changes, speak to your provider about switching plans or adding data packs.

2. Monitor Your Usage

  • Use your provider’s app or your phone’s built-in tools to track data usage.
  • Set alerts or limits to avoid overuse.
  • Under the Telecommunications Consumer Protections Code, providers must notify you at 50%, 85%, and 100% of your data allowance.

3. Be Data-Savvy

Here are updated estimates for common activities (actual usage may vary by device and content quality):

ActivityEstimated Data Usage
1 min video (HD)~5 MB
30 min video (HD)~150 MB
4 min YouTube music video~20 MB
15 min on Facebook~10 MB
100 emails (no attachments)~3 MB
Email with photo attachment~20 MB
Browsing 100 web pages~25 MB
10 min on Google Maps~8 MB

Tip: Streaming in HD or 4K consumes significantly more data. Use Wi-Fi when available.

4. Avoid Background Data Drain

  • Turn off background app refresh for non-essential apps.
  • Disable auto-play videos in social media apps.
  • If using a mobile broadband dongle, disconnect when not in use.

5. Roaming Overseas

  • Before you travel, check with your provider for roaming plans or data packs.
  • Turn off mobile data roaming if you don’t have a roaming plan.
  • Use Wi-Fi calling and offline maps to reduce data use abroad.

6. Use Data-Saving Features

  • Enable data saver mode on Android or Low Data Mode on iOS.
  • Use browsers like Chrome or Opera Mini with built-in data compression.
  • Download content (e.g., playlists, maps) while on Wi-Fi.

7. Stay Secure

  • Avoid public Wi-Fi for sensitive tasks unless using a VPN.
  • Keep apps and OS updated to prevent vulnerabilities.
  • Be cautious of apps requesting excessive permissions.
