Mobile Coverage Maps in Australia
May 27, 2019
Updated 14/10/2026:
Mobile coverage maps are a useful way to understand the level of mobile service you can expect at a particular location. In 2026 the ACMA introduced the Mobile Network Coverage Maps Industry Standard to help consumers compare coverage information consistently across mobile service providers in Australia.
The standard establishes a common framework for how predicted coverage maps are developed and presented. It requires all mobile service providers to use the same technical modelling parameters, coverage categories and descriptions, which supports comparisons of coverage information across different networks.
Under the standard, mobile providers must publish 4G and 5G coverage maps for Australia using four standardised coverage levels:
- Good – customers can expect a high-quality experience with seamless connectivity and performance.
- Moderate – customers can expect a stable and consistent user experience with minimal disruptions to connectivity and performance.
- Basic – customers can expect an adequate user experience with occasional disruptions to connectivity and performance.
- No coverage – there is no, or only very limited, predicted coverage in these areas. Customers should not expect or rely on any service. Any connection that may be available would be incidental, highly inconsistent and temporary, with very poor performance.
